Temperament and career development

The basis of working with a team is getting to know the people you work with - not only the players, but also the staff.

Four temperaments

The four temperament types helped me a lot: choleric, sanguine, phlegmatic and melancholic. It is a topic for a separate lecture, but for me it was a breakthrough - in my private life and at work.

I believe every coach should know their temperament: their traits and patterns of needs. Then you see better who you are and who your players are, and you know how to reach each of them.

An example from a game

Half-time, we are losing 0:1, you walk into the dressing room. Every player is waiting for something different. The choleric - for motivation, strong words and fight. The melancholic - for support and a bit of freedom. The phlegmatic - for calm analysis and concrete information. The sanguine - for the feeling that we are in this together.

How do you combine that? In the team talk it is worth giving each of them a stimulus, and at the end talking separately with selected players. And speaking to them the way they listen best.

Know your staff

It is the same with the staff. It is good to have people with different temperaments - it is harder, but it gives much bigger potential.

You need someone who makes decisions quickly and is decisive in difficult moments (choleric), but also someone more cautious who will stop them from moves that are too quick and not thought through.

I know it from home too - a choleric and a melancholic don't always get along. Together we make a couple with big potential, including for arguments.

🎯 Before you start talking to your team, check how each of them listens.
